Later this year NASA’s DART spacecraft will deliberately crash into an asteroid at a speed of more than 13,000 mph. Given this dramatic end, ground based telescopes, including several at Lowell Observatory, will be tasked with witnessing the aftermath. Nick Moskovitz, PhD, will discuss the background of the mission.

Dr. Jonathon Hill, a mission planner, talks about the Arizona State University Mars Space Flight Facility, which has designed, built and operated infrared instruments throughout the solar system for over 30 years, specializing in both infrared spectrometers and infrared imagers. As its name suggests, the facility initially studied the mineral composition and thermal characteristics of the Martian surface, revealing a mostly volcanic planet with significant amounts of subsurface water ice.
